If you use ServiceLedger 6.0 or earlier, or if you do not wish to have ServiceLedger installed on your database server, you will need to use the ServiceLedger Updater to update your ServiceLedger application or database. Use the following directions to perform an update.

Overview of the Update Process

Any time you update ServiceLedger, you will perform the following two steps. The first part should happen once on the server, while the sceond step should happen on each and every machine ServiceLedger in installed on.

  1. Update the server - in this step, your server downloads updated files from the ServiceLedger web server and stores them in the ServiceLedger database.
  2. Update all workstations - in this step, repeated on each workstation, the updater copies the latest files from your database to the local machine.

Obviously, the second step depends on the successful completion of the first. The second part of this process usually happens automatically the first time ServiceLedger is launched after an update on each workstation--this is the "There are updated files for ServiceLedger.  Would you like to update now?" prompt. Clicking "Yes" on this prompt automacially performs the workstation update for you.

Below are detailed instructions on how to perform both the Server update and the Workstation update.

To update the server (Ensure everyone logs out of ServiceLedger first):

  1. Close ServiceLedger on all computers on your network
  2. Double-check to make sure ServiceLedger is not running on this computer
    1. If you are running an automation server (a copy of ServiceLedger running in Server Mode), you should shut it down or stop the service at this point.
    2. If you are using Terminal Server or Windows Server 2003, you should use the Task Manager's processes tab, along with the "Show processes from all users" checkbox, to verify that no one else is running ServiceLedger on this machine
  3. Go to Start->(All)Programs->ServiceLedger->Updater
  4. Click on the Backup DB button, change the path if you wish, and click OK.
  5. Wait until you receive a dialog that says 'Database Backup Complete'. Click OK again.
  6. If you were provided an update code, place it in the Update field.  Some versions of the updater have a multiline text area where one code can be placed on each line.  If this field is read-only or disabled, you can enable changes by pressing <alt><f5> 
  7. If you have been provided with a custom code, verify that you have entered the custom code in the Custom field.  Some versions of the updater do not have this field, and instead have a multiline text area where you can add the custom code to the bottom.  In this case, you must enter one and only one code per line. 
  8. Press the Update via Internet button
  9. When you receive the Update Complete message, close the updater
  10. Start ServiceLedger and, when the prompt for updated files appears, click Yes
  11. After ServiceLedger and the updater close, restart your automation server if you have one. You may safely log back in to ServiceLedger on other machines now.

To update a workstation (most times this is automatic and does not need to be performed manually):

  1. Go to Start->(All)Programs->ServiceLedger->Updater
  2. Press Update via Database
  3. When you receive the "Update Complete" message, close the updater
